Emergency Care Instructions

When your child faces a dental emergency, taking immediate action can make a significant difference in preserving their oral health. Whether it is a knocked-out tooth, a broken tooth or another dental injury, here are some emergency care instructions to follow before arriving at our office.

Chipped or Fractured Teeth

Chips, cracks or fractures can range from painless to severely painful. If your child experiences this type of injury, please contact our office as soon as possible. While waiting for an appointment, here are some steps you can take:

  • If a piece of the tooth has broken off, rinse it in lukewarm water and bring it to our office.
  • Apply gauze to any bleeding areas for about 10 minutes or until the bleeding stops.
  • Use a cold compress or ice pack on the cheek over the affected area to reduce swelling.
  • Over-the-counter topical pain relievers may help manage discomfort.
  • If available, dental cement (found at most pharmacies) can be used to cover the damaged area temporarily.

Avulsed (Knocked-Out) Teeth

If your child’s tooth has been completely knocked out, time is of the essence. Contact us immediately, and follow these steps while waiting for care:

  • Rinse your child’s mouth with lukewarm water to clear any debris or blood.
  • Gently pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root, and rinse it with water. Avoid using soap, scrubbing the tooth or wrapping it in a tissue.
  • If possible, place the tooth back into the socket and have your child bite down gently to hold it in place. If reinsertion is not possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in milk, saline solution or saliva.

Toothaches

For toothaches, start by rinsing your child’s mouth to clear debris. Gently floss around the affected tooth to dislodge any food particles. If the pain persists, contact our office to schedule an appointment for a thorough examination. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums, as this can damage the surrounding tissues.

By following these emergency care instructions, you can help protect your child’s smile until they can receive professional treatment.
